Kinsul was a wizard, and the first practitioner of Black Magic. He was also the first teacher of the type of magic wizards use today. He was last seen walking into the sea and vanishing. It is believed that his mind was affected by the consumption of Black Magic, and that he was mad.
Marthonis' and Avesne's versions of the story seem to confirm that Kinsul lived without body or power, as a cloud of sorts, until he happened to detect something in the area of the Ice Dungeon. The energy of the Curio reawakened the wandering mind of the former mage, allowing him to muster an enormous power once again. With the Curio in the ID, Kinsul could not go further than Duldrus, where a cult of his new form appeared. The cult is known in the history archives as the Eye.
The Eye was eventually defeated by an army departing from Mirith, with the help of Marthonis (a decision that many opposed to at the time).
